Furo and LUOX Energy Launch Combined Solution for Optimizing Commercial and Industrial Battery Storage

Furo and LUOX Energy are launching a combined solution for optimizing commercial and industrial battery storage systems. By bringing together Furo's platform for storage planning, optimization, and control with LUOX's time-variable electricity products LUOX Dynamic RLM and LUOX Direct Marketing, battery storage systems can now be economically integrated into the electricity market. The first joint pilot projects mark the start of the collaboration.

Storage Optimization and Market Integration as an Integrated Concept

In commercial and industrial settings, battery storage systems can serve a variety of functions: they reduce peak loads, increase self-consumption, shift electricity procurement to cheaper market periods, enable time-flexible feed-in, or make spare capacity available as marketable flexibility. Which operating strategy makes sense depends on the specific site, the load profile, the generation asset, and the sizing of the storage system. However, this isn't decided once during planning: which use case takes priority changes every quarter-hour during ongoing operation.

Furo's platform covers this entire lifecycle – from sizing to energy management to ongoing, forecast-based operation. PLAN sizes the storage system and determines its economics and operating strategy based on the real load profile. During operation, OPERATE takes over control: Furo forecasts peak loads, generation, and electricity prices, and dispatches the storage system accordingly – either via Furo's own energy management system or on top of an existing EMS.

Electricity Procurement and Feed-In at Quarter-Hourly Prices

Going forward, LUOX Energy adds the dimension of market integration for commercial storage systems to this process. LUOX Dynamic RLM ties the electricity procurement of commercial and industrial customers to quarter-hourly exchange electricity prices. Customers with corresponding flexibility potential can thus take advantage of lower-price periods for their electricity purchases. Whether and to what extent this results in an economic benefit depends on the load profile, the operating strategy, and the development of exchange electricity prices. This potential is unlocked during operation: Furo translates the quarter-hourly price signals into concrete charging and discharging schedules for the storage system.

LUOX Direct Marketing covers the feed-in side. Electricity fed into the grid is likewise marketed on the basis of quarter-hourly exchange prices. This means that, for suitable systems, both the marketing and the timing of feed-in can be factored into the economic analysis alongside electricity procurement. Furo's optimization determines the feed-in timing – based on its own price, generation, and load forecasts.

LUOX Products Directly in the Furo Platform

As part of the partnership, Furo is integrating LUOX Dynamic RLM and LUOX Direct Marketing into its platform. Project developers and commercial customers can select these products there and factor them into the design of a storage project. This makes the options for market-price-linked electricity procurement and direct marketing visible as early as the project design phase. This selection isn't limited to the planning stage: it is passed on to operational optimization, so that the storage system is later dispatched against the actual prices of the respective LUOX product.

In Operation: EMS and Multi-Use Optimization

The partnership has the greatest impact during ongoing operation. Furo's energy management system provides the technical foundation for this: it records load, generation, and storage state, connects inverters, storage systems, and meters, and implements the optimization's schedules in the field.

Building on this, forecast-based multi-use optimization continuously evaluates which use case delivers the highest value in each quarter-hour – peak shaving, self-consumption, favorable grid procurement at LUOX Dynamic RLM prices, or feed-in via LUOX Direct Marketing – and prioritizes accordingly. Procurement and feed-in are therefore not considered separately, but are managed within a single, integrated optimization.

Pilot Projects as the Operational Starting Point

The collaboration begins with selected pilot projects in which the storage systems actually operate under Furo's optimization. What is being tested is real-world storage operation: how the schedules respond to the quarter-hourly prices of the LUOX products, how peak shaving, self-consumption, and market optimization are weighed against each other in day-to-day operation, and what revenue the marketing of spare capacity contributes. The benchmark is actual operating results, not simulation calculations.

Based on these experiences, Furo and LUOX Energy aim to develop a standardized process for further storage projects – from sizing through commissioning to optimized long-term operation. Joint sales, communication, and information formats are also planned to accompany this.
